You are absolutely right.

What would it cost, and how much would they earn/lose? That is what will drive their decisions. Maybe Terminal Server and Citrix is the way to go. Maybe Corel and Apple take all the Linux desktop market. But wouldn't it be a pity if the baby-Bill would lose the dominance? Then we would be back to Ballmers statement about pricing and why a break-up is a bad idea... I think Ballmer knows pretty much about what would happen in case of a break-up.

Regarding the previous post, long-term doesn't mean that you cannot change your mind, sell your shares in a company and buy somewhere else.
