Gene, one of the reasons why DDR may require additional layers compared to RDRAM is that the electricals of DDR aren't as well-behaved as RDRAM. Pushing the SDRAM clock to 133 MHz, combined with double-pumping data, all lead to electrical challenges that need to be addressed in one way or another. One of those ways is by resorting to more expensive boards, i.e. additional layers.

Rambus seeks to bypass those electrical problems of SDRAM. That's why RDRAM was implemented, and that's why RDRAM can be pushed to 800 MHz. The electricals are more well-behaved than DDR, which is why RDRAM is able to push the clock speed to astronomical levels.
