Tim,

Who Elian is with is not as significant to me as two things:

1) that his father's decision to take him back is not influenced unduly by circumstances in Cuba (such as Castro's people holding the grandmothers as they are now), and the many months of delay and conditions Castro imposed so as to assure that Elian get returned to the plantation.

2) that this Administration's depravity be exposed and understood once and for all. The raid and all around it makes me ashamed and sickened.

I have little hope on either account, because of the stupidity of the media and the general public.

Again, who Elian is with is not so important to me as the above items. As a custody matter I favor the father, however - a custody decision should be made by the courts, by an order or contempt of court citation - not by an armed raid by federal goons.

I would like to have his father make a free will choice whether to remain in the U.S. for the long-term, but there is no chance of that.

Best,
Jeff Smith
