This sector is still in its infancy and can be likened to where the electronics industry was in the late fifties or early sixties; at the beginning of medium and large scale integrating of electronic components. In this case, the components are optical.

Currently, optical component manufacture is very labor intensive. This results in high costs, low yields, and a technological limit to what can practically be developed.

The optical chip holds the promise of providing a remedy to the optical industry in the same manner that integration provided for the electronics industry in the past; the optical chip will lower labor costs, increase yields, and enable more complex and innovative products to be developed and manufactured.
