That sounds like a reduction of government interference, rather than an increase. If two consenting adults want to declare themselves united, is it really anybody's business but theirs? Is it the job of the Government to decide who can marry whom?

Isn't the right of adults to unite with the consenting partners of their choice a fairly integral part of the pursuit of happiness, which the founders declared inalienable?

Does it really matter if a majority of Vermonters disapprove of something that is none of their business? If a majority of Alabamans disapproved of unions between mixed-race couples, would that give Alabama the right to disallow such unions?

Congratulations to the legislature of Vermont for defending a basic right in the face of popular disapproval.
