When I called Mindspring they told me they only support 1 machine.

This is true--they only support one physical connection per line. However, if you buy a hub like the linksys below:

linksys.com

You can plug the modem into the uplink port in the hub and up to three computers can obtain an IP address.

The diagram will look like:

Computer 1---|
Computer 2------>hub---->ADSL modem--->Mindspring-->Internet
Computer 3---|

Its not a complicated set up at all. Just plug in your computers into the hub and ensure the modem is connected to the UPLINK port.

What is PPPoE

Point to Point protocol over the Ethernet. A lot of DSL providers already have PPP infrastructure for dial-up users and PPPoE lets them leverage this support for DSL.

PPPoE adds miniscule overhead to each packet, but the big concern is that it requires you to have a PPPoE client on your PC (and the early clients were very unstable). The current generation of clients are much better.

However, the newest modems have updated firmware for PPPoE support. In addition, routers and hubs like the Linksys or ISB2LAN from NexLand offer built in PPPoE support so you don't have to use client software if you have these devices.

If you look at the newsgroups, PPPoE is very controversial and hotly debated since it lets ISPs overscribe their networks. I personally don't care either way as long as its stable.

BTW, cable providers are starting to use PPPoE too, so its spreading.
