Re: CPQ storage revenue

Both CPQ and DELL have zero chance of garnering more than crumbs from the storage table. However the reason I am bullish about their prospects is that I believe they will come to accept this long before IBM and SUNW do and will turn this to their advantage by partnering with EMC. Over the next two years I expect they will offer next generation server "peripherals" which are specifically designed to plug into the new Enterprise Storage Network model of computing that EMC is spearheading. It is this "capitulation" to the inevitable which will prove a boon to CPQ and DELL and the kiss of death to the mainframe-mentality of IBM and SUNW.

The reason is simple. In a world in which the server becomes a commoditized peripheral to the ESN, who better to thrive in this new era than companies which have already proven they can compete and win in commodity processor markets? Look at the chart of, for example, WDC from 1992-97 when low-cost disk drives first started to ride the exploding PC boom. I fully expect to see an echo of this sort of move in 2002-2007 as demand for server peripherals similarly explodes. Remember, INTC is on record as forecasting a fifty-fold growth in server demand over the next several years. This will be a huge high-margin opportunity for INTC and those "PC" boxmakers who embrace this trend.
