Why do you have to junk an 860 to get the Verizon national rate ?

I was just at an Airtouch store and they indicated that they offer Verizon service on only the StarTac or an Audiovox (I can't remember which model). The reason is that the phones all need to be tri-mode in that they operate on 800mhz, 1900mhz, and AMPS. I suppose this is so that roaming on Primeco's system is digital.

I still have Airtouch national calling plan with no roaming charges and no long distance charges. This plan has been discontinued in favor of the Verizon plan. Fortunately, I'm grandfathered. However, if I'm roaming in Primeco land, I'll be on their AMPS system.
