Ah! But what if the top artist releases were no longer available via CD, nor video, nor Cassette. . . but available ONLY by direct transmission in a format that was encrypted and not available for "open" recording. . .since you don't "own" the actual recording. You never will. .. you merely rent it. . .each time you want to hear it. . . so the artists you listen to most often. . . get paid most. . . and those you hear once and don't like. . . don't.

Equipment is already in place for direct transmission to cars. . . and there are already direct receivers via microwave in the form of the walkman.

What it will take is a massive about face from the current crop of consumer equipment. . . and acceptance of a new breed of equipment.

I realize this is difficult. . .and would require serious changes. . . many of which consumers would balk at. . . but then again. . .consumers will be undergoing many such changes as broadband connects us to the world. And the record companies are out of choices here. . . they now need radical changes to save their industry.

And this is why I have been discussing A.T. & T.'s Liberty Media and Liberty Digital so much of late. They have been jockeying for position as the clear leader in direct transmission of music and movies. . . buying up every related company. . . and cornering the post-production market.

I believe that the big change will happen in conjunction with the nationwide [worldwide] rollout of digital [fibre-optic] cable set-top boxes and wireless broadband to the person and the car. . .

I'd say within about 2 or 3 years. . .

At that point, such music would need to be transferred back to analog in order to theoretically "clear" it of encryption. . . However it could easily require an encryption chip at the analog stage as well. . .similar to Dolby. . .so if you don't have the LATEST audio equipment. . .you simply can't play the latest music.

Now what? MP3 would be the king of garage bands. And the internet would have millions of recordings of wannabes. . .but the top artists would only be available via this new format. . . .like it or not.

It is tough love. But it is either that or the record industry and eventually the movie industry will be destroyed by the rapidly spreading cancer of piracy.
