why do they need enterprise? what effect on the rest of their business if they just dumped it, spun it off, sold it? do they own it in order to have a business after the internet is built out?

Jack, it was George Gilder who once described Nortel as "an across the board play" on networking. Others have stated that Nortel has the broadest product portfolio of any networking company. The broad product portfolio is one of the strengths of the company. A product, such as a gigabit ethernet switch, which is originally developed for the enterprise sector (Accelar 1200) evolves into a carrier grade product for the service provider and carrier sector (Accelar 8600). There is a synergy created by serving all of the sectors. That is why I have argued it is a mistake to judge the success of the Bay acquisition by the growth of the enterprise business. The industry changes rapidly. One year ago, one of the analysts was saying that wireless was all that Nortel had to offer. I think Nortel should remain a "full service" networking company with hardware and software to fill all networking needs. Right now, optical is hot so they should emphasize that business but two years from now, some other area may be equally hot.
