I tried to distinguish between two kinds of literacy. Small l is technical literacy: reading, writing,'rithmetic, and now Word and html.
Capital L literacy would be cultural literacy: Homer, Goethe, Marx, Berra. That kind of stuff.
Our schools are turning out graduates who have an awful grasp of Literacy imo. And one of the culprits is a hypersensitivity to "cultural diversity". Nobody's sticking up for things kids "have to know". I'm looking for a way to reintroduce common ground into a high shool education.

If you have a better way to do this, by all means talk to me. But I don't see how we are going to circumvent some core of required reading. How else will we be able to communicate without this arduous process of first learning each other's semantic assumptions?
