If you are a developer writing for the Web, chances are you are writing for IE4/5. Of all of my new company's competitors, I am practically the only one that is truly cross platform. Most of the productivity start ups have targeted IE, for good reason. Then there is the issue of what server technology to use. MSFT server technology happens to be very good and gives a good bang for the buck when matched to commodity Intel-based hardware. I started development from scratch and still landed on a Wintel based system (with some linux). Granted I am using Java extensively, but NT/2000 is a very cost effective combination where linux is good for bulk servers.
