CHECKFREE posts smaller-than-expected loss, surprise.. biz.yahoo.com

ATLANTA, April 25 (Reuters) - Online billing services provider CheckFree Holdings Corp. (NasdaqNM:CKFR - news) on Tuesday reported a smaller-than-expected third-quarter loss and said it sees its losses narrowing even further in the fourth quarter and fiscal year 2000.

The Atlanta-based company posted a net loss of $3.9 million, or 7 cents per share, for the third quarter, compared to a loss of $308,000, or one cent per share, in the year-ago quarter.

Wall Street analysts on average had been expecting CheckFree to post a loss of 11 cents per share, according to First Call/Thomson Financial, which tracks earnings data.

Revenues for the quarter were $52.7 million compared to $51.2 million in the same period last year.

The company also said it expects fourth quarter revenues to be in the range of $81 million to $86 million, with a net loss per share of 6 cents to 8 cents for the quarter.

In addition, fiscal 2000 revenues are seen in the range of $302 million to $307 million, with a net loss in the range of 29 cents to 32 cents per share for the year, both well ahead of Wall Street expectations.

The consensus estimate is a loss of 11 cents per share for the fourth quarter and a loss of 37 cents per share for fiscal 2000, according to First Call.

Shares of CheckFree rose 1-7/8 to close at 32-1/2 on the Nasdaq stock market on Tuesday.
