John:

Yes, SI is potentially better than RB - but by accident of history RB is NETP's main discussion board and the SI board has been dead. I will post from RB from time to time, but I hope the SI board will come alive.

NETP's leadership and strength is based on its R&D. The real-time personalisation engine using collaborative filtering was developed over many years at the University of Minnesota before being sold to NETP. The Chief Scientist at NETP cotninues to hold a post at the University and there is a close working relationship with the University. Last year NETP was awarded the prestigious MIT award for innovation and also an award by the Economist. It has 17 patents applied for. Because of its sophistication - the entry barrier to collobarative filtering (cf) is high. CF has the advantage of protecting a users privacy, being scalable over very large and complex operations, growing in intelligence with use, and giving a very fast response. The competitive stuff is called "rules based" - it is relatively easy to step down from CF to rules based but the opposite is not true. NETP will also offer rules based because in certain situations that is all that is needed and it allows NETP to expand its market.

The answer is that NETP has developeed all the cf filtering it uses and continues to maintain a very lareg R&D staff working on further applications. It also offers the technolgy it acuqired with the KD1 acqusition. There are one or two small bits in its offering which it has licensed from other companies.

Some of the single platform companies - Vignette, Broadvision, Epiphany etc - have chosen to licence a lot of the software that makes up their platform. NETP had such a lead in cf that it started off presenting itself as an "arms dealer" selling its stuff to everybody - including those mentioned. In fact 7% of NETP's revenues comes from sales of its product by Vignette. 26% of its revenues comes from sales through the channel - up from about 13% in the 1Q. This trend will continue. NETP has about 20 major partners and their customer base is in the thousands. Several of them are doubling customer base by more than 100% per annum. It is anticipated that as the partnerships ramp up - it will bring exponential growth in NETP's revenues from indirect customers.
