One or two years growth means nothing. The question is, how well will the company be doing 5 years from now? What will the long-term growth be, ignoring the explosive growth that any start-up has in the first few years?

The formulas you are referring to really should be used for profitable companies-- one reason is that profitability implies some stability in the numbers. And even then, there's a host of assumptions about market maturity and competition.

I can have massive growth selling 100 dollar bills on the net for 95 dollars. It means nothing until I somehow make a profit off of it.

At this point, it's best to concentrate on beliefs about the market itself. My view is that B2B competition will be massive and drive down profits to marginal. So growth in revenues or not, Vertical Net will not make much money.
