But Elian's father was estranged from him.

First off you have no evidence of that. Second off by all reports his mother in effect kidnapped him to take him on that ill advised boat ride. Third off the events have unfolded in a bizarre and overwhelming way for the resources of an average citizen of Cuba, fueled in no small way by the surprising intransigence of the Relatives in Miami and Republican zealots eager to meddle without regard to the human issues involved in the separation of a child from his parent.

I can tell you are someone that refuses to read the NY Times article of the account of the entire family's story.

By all means don't let the facts get in the way of your drive to rip a son from his father and a father from a son all in the name of God knows what. I can only suppose that whatever your drive is it is not well founded in the Christian tradition of compassion, forgiveness and redemption, but it is rather focused on the more worldly Roman like issues of empire and some kind of ideological evangelism.

Read the article, if you dare, or is your stance that the NY Times is a font of left wing spew that can not be trusted for any reportage on issues that you may disagree with?
