We are going to see a lot of discussion of prostate cancer in the next few weeks. I wish Mayor Giuliani well.

"It came about as a result of taking a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test about two weeks ago,"

CEGE will be presenting their results on prostate cancer at the ASCO meeting next month.

Clinical data from the initial Phase I/II prostate cancer GVAX© trial conducted at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions were reported in April 1999 and demonstrated that the treatment was safe and well tolerated and resulted in antitumor effects as measured by blood levels of PSA. Disease stabilization and a decrease in the rate of rise of PSA levels were observed in 15 of 21 (71 percent) patients. One patient experienced a greater than 50 percent decrease in
PSA levels, in one case continuing after eight months. Fourteen of the 15 patients with stable disease produced specific antibodies in their blood directed against the prostate cancer cells comprising the vaccine, and none of the six patients with progressive disease produced these antibodies demonstrating a high degree of correlation between antitumor activity as measured by PSA and antitumor immunity as measured by antibody formation.

"The gene we used to turn on the immune system is so good that it activates everything," says William G. Nelson, M.D., Ph.D. "We were not surprised to see T-cell activation, the arm of the immune system triggered by viruses, but this vaccine also stimulated new high-level antibody production. Such a complete and thorough activation of the immune system against prostate cancer has never before been seen," he says.

In fact, the therapy is so well tolerated by patients that no hospitalization is required. The only side effects associated with this therapy are flulike symptoms and redness and itchiness at the vaccine site for several days.
