News & up 11% Exabyte's M2 Receives Highest Test Results in Linux Certification Program BOULDER, Colo., April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Exabyte Corporation (Nasdaq: EXBT), a leader in network backup systems, announced today record- setting test results for Mammoth-2 (M2(TM)) throughout Linux testing. M2 backed up 500 MB of compressed files in under 52 seconds, beating 17 tape drives from six vendors. End users can now be assured that M2 is certified for Linux operating environments, and that M2 is the fastest drive on the market. Testing was completed under the Linux Tape Device Certification program through Enhanced Software Technologies Inc. (EST) ( www.LinuxTapeCert.org ).
"I was astounded by the fact that M2's transfer rate was 12 MB per second, even on a four-year-old Pentium system," said Tim Jones, EST's vice president and lead on the Linux Tape Device Certification program. "Using a standard 2.2.14 Linux kernel on a Pentium P5 166MHz, we were able to attain the fully- rated, native transfer rate using M2 with an Adaptec 2940U2W SCSI host adapter. Exabyte's M2 drive is more than twice as fast as its nearest current competitor under those same conditions."
Seventeen tape drives have completed the Linux certification, and Exabyte's M2 received higher test results and out-performed all other products, including the Benchmark DLT1, Ecrix VXA-1, HP DLT8000 and Tandberg DLT7000. The certification program is designed to test and certify a vendor's backup device hardware against a known set of parameters to ensure compatibility for use with Linux.
"With Linux certification and M2's high performance, we are able to obtain new customers and increase the adoption of M2 products," said Ken Cruden, director of marketing for Exabyte. "The Linux tape certification program ensures customers who use that operating system are getting compatible, quality products. With its outstanding performance, M2 is the answer for Linux users experiencing explosive data growth and the accompanying need for storage."
About Linux Tape Device Certification Program
Tape drive certification through the Linux Tape Certification (LTC) program entails the use of a static, open set of test procedures that are Linux distribution and application independent. This process ensures that the testing is non-biased, and that all devices are tested on a level playing field.
