Hello Don, I am sure there are guys more expert in calls than me on the thread. I play calls only on IDEC and this is because, although I am not an expert on calls I do seem pretty adept at calling the bottoms of IDEC stock. That talent makes calls quite useful for me.
I think that you bought your calls a little far out for this play. You will make out well on them... it's just that on the turn around, the closer-to-expiration calls move first and fastest. I think your Oct 20s are far enough out so that you paid a premium on them as it was expected they would come to be in the money. To some extent that premium took and will take into account some of IDEC stock's gains past the strike. On the May 20s, no one expected this to make it in the money so they were 50 cents. Not much of a premium there so when the calls went into the money everything above 20 went straight to the value of the call.
I welcome anyone on the thread knowledgable in calls to contribute or correct! If we all learn about calls, next time IDEC takes a dive, we can discuss which calls to buy and we'll all make out like bandits :o).
