No tangible evidence has ever proven advertising to be effective in selling products and services in any communications vehicle whether it be network television or highway billboards. Advertising creates awareness which is why so much money has historically been budgeted for this function. The more places a company has a presence, the greater the awareness. Companies will continue to spend money promoting themselved online, just as they have been doing in print and broadcast for many years. This is a core strategic initiative for any company that needs to build their brand or hawk a product or service.

Online ad budgets have been steadily increasing for the past 6 years and will continue to do so for the mid to long term.
This is what reputable market research firms like Forrester and Jupiter Communications have to say, but hey what do they know ;-) What Yahoo loses in ad revenue from Dr. Koop they will make tenfold from the IBMs and Coca Colas in the coming years.
