I think the current round of nastiness began with the character assassination of Robert Bork and John Tower, and the attempted Borking of Clarence Thomas.

That was a pretty ugly scene, but things had taken a decidedly turn for the worse prior to that. The character assisination of Speaker Wright was among the earliest public flareups, but most of it began with a series of character assisation letters sent out by Robertson to his faithful. Who could forget Lee Atwater and the current no-holds barred approach to slander.
