Stan,

OT: cash allotments

Given my age and limited exposure to bear markets in the past I tend to be fully invested and have not taken advantage of cashing out of profitable positions even when valuations seem unjustifiably high. A good example was SanDisk at $169 post-split a few months ago.

As a result when the market drops and stocks on my watch list fall abruptly I have had to sell profitable positions in order to diversify. Sometimes these positions are exited for no reason than to raise cash. This is not a good strategy, but perhaps the lesser of two evils when the other option is leaving cash on the sideline while the market races forward.

My favorite holding period is forever. I am learning now that unreasonable valuations may temper my stance in this regard.
