While Intel is in a shortage I don't think the threat of a price war is too great. Especially when the shortage is most strongly felt in the most expensive range. They can't supply the high end where they make all the money. AMD can make up considerable losses at the low end by selling just a few 1 Ghz pcs.

doug, I agree....I thought we were talking the second half.

Also, I believe one of the great fallacies about AMD vs Intel is that AMD couldn't compete due to prices. I think AMD couldn't compete because the k6-2 and k6-3 line weren't worth buying.

I don't think its a fallacy...AMD couldn't compete because of prices....Intel kept celeron prices down and kept cumine prices up so that celeron's poor margins were covered. AMD did not have high end chips at that time and was starving trying to compete at the celeron prices set by Intel. With Athlon, the playing field is more level but Intel still has the upper hand.

AMD has been afforded some incredible breaks but two good quarters does not wipe away years of deprivation. AMD is recovering but still is not in good economic health.

Intel, on the other hand, is in excellent health....don't mistake these miscues as signs of failing health. The only thing wounded about Intel is its corporate ego and, to a lesser degree, its reputation.....the AMD successes have not hurt Intel one iota.

To think otherwise can only be considered delusional in my opinion.
