chaz: To my namesake with prior rights. C Traut's post reminded me re "Merlin" which was her "secret" name as one who knew much and spoke only carefully - so Mike is a fine and very valid successor.

Re PHCM. This is as often is the case in new technologies, complex. The Unwired Planet (which is Phone.com under an earlier label as Merlin is for C Traut and Chaz is for me), decided early on that the best way to get a seat at the table among the "big boys" was to give away their technology to a group - in return for the side benefits.

Whether this was a good choice or not remains to be seen. Nokia is claiming (deju vu all over again) to have "invented" the technology which Unwired Planet in fact did.

But that is neither here nor there.

The success of PHCM really depends on the server related services they can sell - not a lock on IPR - the IPR was given away. Right or wrong, that was done.

Now what?

Dr J argues, and of course I listen carefully to him, that WAP (Phone.com's technology which is the basis for the WAP forum) is not the best way to go for the wireless / internet nexus. He is probably right. He usually is.

But, and this is a big BUT, the Europeans and Japanese are counting on WAP as their only means of having any chance at all of diverting attention from the huge advantage HDR and Qualcomm have at the wireless / internet nexus.

Who will win? Will the latter day Betamax (perhaps the analogy) triumph? Maybe, but it ain't no slam dunk.

PHCM has a huge cast of characters who have licensed their stuff in Japan and elsewhere. Power squared. Will be most interesting.

Note: Qualcomm as reflects the brilliance of the leadership there, makes WAP available (with benefit to Phone.com), even though Dr J is skeptical of how "necessary" it is.

This is a little like the Q's careful way to make sure it can use Palm, Win CE and EPOC.

Best.
