Scot,

I don't know what the shiny object surrounding the chip are, but I am sure they have nothing to do with cache. The cache is on die itself. Those objects may be some capacitors or something. They don't appear to be high enough to have a contact with the heatsink.

I wonder if it would not be a good idea for AMD to somehow physically attach the heatsink to the chip for better heat conductivity.
