I don't "like" any of them. I don't know any of them. Some of them seem more likable than others- but who knows what is what? And does "likability" matter? As I see it- 1.Boy in custody of both parents (or maybe in the custody of his father), both parents by all accounts love him very much - certainly father is NOT absent- disappears from school 2. Mother with boyfriend (who has criminal offenses, and doesn't seem to have been much of anything- but WHO knows?) takes off with son in little boat that develops engine trouble, another family on board with a 5 year old child, make the decision to turn back 3. Mother and most of the people on board die- and the kid survives due to luck 4. kid is handed over to distant relatives in Miami (father has made calls to relatives, when he suspects what his ex-wife has done) 5.Father expects son to be handed back to Cuba (Castro probably isn't eager to rush this matter- he probably wasn't in a hurry to allow the dad over to claim his son- but who can say?) 6. relatives begin to split over whether the boy should go back to dad or stay in America. Several relatives see the boy as a chip to force part of the family to come to America- or this is what they say in interviews. 7. then relatives begin to say THEY should have custody. Why?

If a mother immolated herself to switch the custody of her children she could not do that. Dying isn't really germane to custody. Dying for a cause isn't germane either. Custody of a Cuban child should be a Cuban matter. The only question really is- is this a Cuban child or a child who really seeks asylum? I doubt this kid wanted to be here once his mother died. I bet he wanted his father when he was drifting at sea. I bet he asked for his father as soon as he was rescued. That is the key to RESPECTING the sovereignty of this child- what he wished for before the Miami connection got hold of him. I think we can all imagine what this child- who from all accounts had a good relationship with both parents- would have wanted when he first was fished out of the ocean.

Lots of people make a great deal of the wonderful life he would have here. I would say such a wonderful life is by no means assured. Lazaro doesn't seem to have such a great life- that's just the way it seems- who can say for sure? The Cleaner doesn't seem to have a great life either. So he goes home to be a figurehead, he will be a pawn either way, here or there. At least if he goes home with his father it seems to set no terrible precedents regarding international custody, and international child abduction.
