It's not just making IE - there is more behind it. What exactly was the reason that MS decided to give it away for free? Do you think it was because they were philanthropic?
Of course it wasn't out of philanthropy, Microsoft just realized that the Internet is really important and that they should have a brower to complement Windows. You don't blame Microsoft for having a dialup network do you? They believed that it would be necessary to retain their OS market share if they had a browser. I have Linux Mandrake installed and it was bundled with Netscape... nobody screams there.

I believe MS is already gouging the consumers. Their OS prices haven't come down even though the number of pcs sold in the world has been steadily going up.
Microsoft has no reason to change the price, but I have never seen Windows sell for MORE. It's always 89 bucks for the upgrade and 200 or something for the full version. Nobody is FORCING someone to upgrade either. You can run win95 perfectly fine. I do not consider Microsoft selling Windows for 90 bucks every 2 years (for newer driver compatability and more stable environment) as gouging the costumer.

I think government should restrict what products they can integrate with their OS. You have to view the OS just as the electric lines that carry power to your house. Would you allow the electric company force you to use only their brand of appliances. If they are allowed to do it, they can do it you know, without giving any chance to the competition just because they own the power lines.

The analogy does not work. What you are suggesting is that the home owner has no choice. The consumer has always had a choice with IE/Netscape. For the electric company to go from supplying power to making eletronic appliances is a lot more than what Microsoft is doing.

I don't want Microsoft to be broken up... it's a punishment for being too successful. Why doesn't the government make a better OS? They could use the money squandered from trial and from the whole elian gongalez thing to hire some people and make one.
