If there weren't Microsoft and Windows, only a tiny percentage of people will have computers. Tench, Elmer, and Paul are probably very poor since there is no Intel, let alone have time to chat on SI.

This is ridiculous. Probably you weren't extant in 1974, when Intel was already a legendary innovator & competitor, having invented the DRAM, EPROM, & arguably, the uP, while Gates, Allen, & Ballmer were pimply-faced teenagers playing cards & teaching their time-sharing systems to do likewise somewhere in the vicinity of the Charles River. And visionaries like Lee Felsenstein & Ted Nelson were already talking about "community memory" & "hypertext", concepts which presaged the Internet and the World Wide Web. I mean, Steve Jobs was on the cover of Time magazine for helping to make computers personal in 1982, before Windows, or even the Macintosh, existed.
