Kenith,

MS IE came after Netscape. IE came after NS had a majority of the market share. NS gave away the product to educational institutes and non-commercial users, because the commercial users were willing to subsidize it for the other users - mainly to nurture the usage and proliferation of Internet. I don't think MS would have done that if it had come with the product first and garnered the market share as NS did.

< Had Bill made the first move, I would have sympathize Netscape.>

Bill gave away IE even to the commercial users wiping out the browser revenues for Netscape. They even gave away the Internet server OS for free to hurt Netscape. After their market share went up, I think they started collecting licensing fees on that (I could be wrong here).

IMHO, it would be a great long term investment.
