In the next fifty years almost every major coastline city could be underwater due to global warming. Global warming is now a fact. I have to wonder why I rarely hear about it on the news. I hear about potential killer asteroids, and other far-fetched disasters, but rarely environment problems.

I can't imagine what exactly can be done about it, I believe in the next twenty years governments of industrialized nations will take a lot of energy trying to save their coastal cities worth trillions of dollars. They are used to taking action long after something bad happens and I doubt this will be any different.

It seems there are very few people who are environmental activists, then most of the rest of the world doesn't pay a bit of attention or simply doesn't believe they'll have to worry about it in their lifetime. Also, people know that no one person can fix the problem, so a lot of people, including me, just don't "do their part". Personally I do not do much because beyond recycling there is little more I can physically do. There are very few things that government should take responsibility for. Environment is definately one of those things. There aren't any armies ready to invade the United States, but pollution has the potential to do more damage than any number of millions of invading troops. I suppose I believe the governments sole job is to protect our environment, meaning protecting it from invading countries, freedoms, and the physical environment that keeps its occupants alive.

On the other hand, it is people who elect the government. So I guess it comes back to the possibility that people don't bother to worry about what is going to happen to them a few years or even a few months ahead of time.
