OTOH, the IRS will get nothing from Linux and would have got a lot from Microsoft.

The real problem here is not so much Microsoft but the intrusion of the DOJ into the tech sector. The Microsoft case could drag on for years, draining Microsoft assets. AOL, CSCO, INTC or many others could be next.
Why do you think institutions dumped MSFT stock from 119 down to 65? Because Microsoft will be a better company next year if they are split up? I don't think so.
Try thinking about all the other lawsuits that can be brought against them. 19 states to start with.
It sickens me to see people on this thread miss what is really going on here....
