An Open Letter To Bill Gates:

Dear Bill,

As preface, I'm a user of MSFT products, a shareholder and believe that our economy is driven by technology of which MSFT has been and continues to be a leading contributor. Our last names even sound alike.

I believe however that MSFT needs to take a more active role in reaching a settlement with the government through:

1. Understanding that the lawsuit is not about innovation, it is about competition and the use of MSFT's monopoly power to stifle competition.

2. Understanding that the government protagonists are not bureaucrats but are very well respected working people. As example I voted for the Attorney General of CT, Richard Blumenthal, who is very well respected in his fight for justice.

3. As a show of good faith, immediately establish a $10B fund for stimulating competition and innovation by establishing minority investments in emerging technology companies in such fields as broadband, internet, e-commerce, etc.

4. Offer to increase the fund by 5 - 10 X upon achievement of an amicable settlement with the government.

5. Personally meet with the government prosecutors soon (say within 2 weeks) to work out a settlement. These talks should be mediated by a well respected individual - someone like Jimmy Carter who has technology and legal background and has a track record of successful negotiations. It is essential that you personally be at most of these talks, that you show humility, and that you show a willingness to compromise and that both parties conduct these talks in plain English.

Best wishes for success,

Gary
