If they are trading that many stocks I would think the overall effect would follow pretty close to an index, say the S&P. Wouldn't it just be much easier to trade the index. Am I missing something?

YES...

If one just bought every stock in an index, he would just replicate the index. But by buying only the ones going up and in many cases shorting the ones going down, he will on any given day way outperform the index.
