<<Did you really think that the Miami family was going to ship Elian back to Castro, when Elian's father wouldn't come 90 miles to see his son? The signals were mixed. They knew that Elian's mother had given her life to bring Elian to freedom. Shipping Elian back to an uncaring father, and to Castro's tyranny, would have been a cruel slap in the face to Elian's dead mother.>>
I think Elian was/is a meal ticket to the Miami relatives, since none of them work. I have heard Elian's Mother was not a political person.I have been told that she was in love with her boyfriend, and would have followed him anywhere. He was supposedly on Castro's list and had to leave. She followed out of love, not politics. I think by now, no one is left that thinks Elian's father is uncaring. In Cuba, he cared for him 5 days a week even though the parents were divorced. I think originally he believed the child would be sent back to the surviving parent, which is the civilized way.
Regardless of the circumstances, The Cubans reaction to American law and Americans was unforgivable in my estimation. Rioting in the streets, disrespecting the flag of the country who took them, setting fires, is no way to pay back a country who has opened their doors to them. I am disappointed and disgusted with their attitudes and behavior. For the first time in my life I am in favor of normalizing relations with Cuba and discontinuing the embargo. I am not alone in this thinking. I see no reason for continuing to back the exiles. They have shown their true distaste for America and its laws.
