In the age of enlightenment, the best minds were interested in philosophy. Nowadays, the best minds are engaged in other pursuits. It is my philosophy that the scientific advances you speak of come from the culmination of philosophic thought as put forth by Thomas Jefferson. The only thing left is to make philosophy a science, by removing things like the soul from the equation. Philosophy is a dead art nowadays, and just stands in the way of science. Issues like cloning humans, etc.
