Socialism and democracy can co-exist. Kind of like an employee-owned and operated corporation. A democratic people can legitimately choose to own their resources collectively and share the fruits of their collective labor by some pre-determined criteria. It may end badly sometimes, but it's at least theoretically possible that it can work well. I personally wouldn't choose it and, given the chance, I would discourage them from it, but as long as it's a democratic choice, it's their choice.
