I suspect in regards to GG and Merrill Lynch, there's some mutual back scratching --- you scratch mine, I'll scratch yours.

GG will probably be given private placements, or at minimum, pre-IPO shares --- all perfectly legal --- in return for sharing his research in a timely fashion. ML has not been on the leading edge of technology and maybe they're hoping to get in on better deals if they have GG on board. Goldman Sachs, MSDW, and CSFB are all far more respected as tech underwriters and certainly don't need a star to attract deals. When you bring out quality companies, you build up a good reputation and the cycle repeats. The reverse is also true.

I suspect GG's dealings with ML will be more highly scrutinized than as a writer for Forbes or editor of TGR. The only ones who might feel slighted will be his subscribers. Sort of like standing in line at the bank and having a bus load of senior citizens come traipsing in and cut in front.
