PCCW Looks To Shore Up Bid
Pacific Century CyberWorks sought to shore up its bid for Cable & Wireless
HKT, unveiling a broadcasting joint venture and telegraphing a slew of
upcoming deals.
Francis Yuen, deputy chairman of the Hong Kong Internet start-up, said:
"We are signing quite a number of new content providers, which will be
announced in a couple of weeks. What we can do is business as usual, and
let the investors decide."
It will also roll out its long-awaited broadband Internet services across
Asia, including China and Japan, to be delivered by satellite or cable in
June, Mr. Yuen said. Cable and Wireless shareholders will meet to vote on
their company's sale of 54 per cent in C&W HKT in June, putting the share
price at that time under keen scrutiny.

CyberWorks HKT Bid in Question, Singtel may make counteroffer
Pacific Century CyberWorks said it's standing firm on a two-month-old
offer for Cable & Wireless HKT, even after its tumbling share price sliced
the value of its bid by a third and sparked reports of a counteroffer.
Singapore Telecommunications and Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. lost out to
Hong Kong entrepreneur Richard Li's CyberWorks in the bidding war for Hong
Kong's biggest telephone company. Now, they may be poised to make a $30
billion counteroffer to Cable & Wireless.
CyberWorks' cash and stock offer was worth $38.1 billion when it was
first announced Feb. 29. In the two months since, CyberWorks shares have
slid 42 percent as investors worldwide questioned the prices they paid for
online pioneers with scant earnings, cutting the value of its offer to
$25.7 billion.
CyberWorks remains optimistic, Li said. Senior executives at Cable &
Wireless, which owns 54 percent of HKT, told him during the past two days
that the transaction was on track, Li told reporters in Hong Kong. In
London, Cable & Wireless spokesman Peter Eustace said much the same.

India?s Growth Rate May Surpass China?s for First Time Since 1990
For the first time in a decade, India might grow at a faster rate than
China this year according to the Asian Development Bank, in its annual
economic outlook. The ADB projects that India will post 7 percent
inflation-adjusted growth in 2000 and 2001, outpacing China, which it
projects will grow at a 6.5 percent rate in 2000 and 6 percent rate in
2001. The last time that growth in India outpaced China was in 1990. India
is benefiting from a resillient industrial sector, a reform-minded
government and a software and services sector taking part in the New
Economy boom.

(HFC) CATV system. The deployment in China's Guangxi Province, set for
May, will mark the third time in the last year that DiviCom has been
selected to provide head-end equipment for digital television services
never before seen in China. In February, DiviCom deployed its head-end
technology for the country's first digital multi-channel, multi-point
distribution system (MMDS). And in August 1999, DiviCom's head-end
solution was chosen for China's first direct-to-home (DTH) digital
satellite service.
