Craig and Aus,

There have been a lot of great messages on this board about SSTI and FLSH. SSTI has attracted the attention of many people with their recent earnings. It is obvious that all the companies with any form of association with Flash memory products will be successful for the foreseeable future.

Unfortunately there is still a great deal of misunderstanding about the overall Flash market. There are many who believe that the leadership position of Sandisk in Flash Storage market has not been completely appreciated.

A. FLSH (M-System) has NO expertise in Flash Memory. They started with development of a software solution (Flash Translation Layer) for commodity Flash memory (Intel and AMD) products. Their product concept was evolved into DOC(Disk On Chip). They have been recently working with Toshiba NAND Flash on an integrated Flash solution. They may be purchasing NAND Flash memory from Sandisk after completion of Toshiba JV.

B. SSTI has some interesting technology in terms of low current Flash memory. Unfortunately their Flash technology is a few generations behind the ones from Sandisk or Toshiba.
Sandisk (256Mbit) is three to four generations ahead of SST(16 Mbit) in terms of Capacity.

SST?s MPF (Multi-Purpose Flash) competes with Intel, AMD, ST Microelectronics, Fujitsu and Atmel. The highest capacity of MPF is currently 16 Mbit.

SST?s SuperFlash competes against AMD(Am29F040) and Ateml(AT29F040) Flash memory. These are 4 Mbit parts.

I am sure most people are familiar with their ComboMemory ( SRAM + Flash) for cell phone market.

I don't know if Compact Flash is a profitable product for SST.
Because of SST's inability to develop high capacity memory their high capacity CompactFlash can NOT use their own technology. I believe SST uses Toshiba (and Samsung?) NAND Flash. I guess SST maybe a customer of Sandisk after completion of JV.
SSTI manufactures its own CompactFlash controller. As everybody knows they pay royalty to Sandisk for this controller.

Obviously SST is very successful in supplying low capacity Flash to embedded market.

I guess it may more appropriate to ask when Sandisk become interested in penetrating embedded (low capacity) flash market.

Cheers,

Derek
