Blue LED developer looks for stateside challenges

Looking back, Nakamura attributes his success at Nichia to the reactor, which he developed and built from scratch:

"Other aspects are the same as conventional lasers. No one has been able to develop the same [two-flow] reactor. As the reactor differs, the film layer grown by the reactor has very high quality, completely different from films developed by other researchers. In process or device technology, major semiconductor manufacturers have higher technology. Only the reactor makes a difference. Only it let us make better devices. That's all."

According to Nakamura, the technology at the core of their 'Reactor X' is closely guarded at Nichia, and hasn't been disclosed, not even in patents. Big time trade secrets! Meanwhile, at Nakamura's insistence, they've obtained broad patent coverage on the devices. Altogether not a bad strategy: make 'em however you want, but to beat us you'll have to make something else.
