AWE has one plus amd many minuses.
1) The plus is that AT&T is a good marketing company that can still warn the hearts of the Grandmas and Grandpas of this country that remember when it was solid as a rock.
2) The minuses--o so many
a)Dumping 10 billion on these old folks and unsuspecting lifer employees is a travasty. A not so record 1st day pop and a "conflict of interest" tracking stock to boot.
AT&T Wireless (AWE: news, msgs) shares rose 7.4
percent, giving initial investors a slight premium in its
first day of trading. The largest initial public offering in
U.S. history opened at 30 1/8, and traded up 2 3/16 to
31 11/16. See IPO Report.
b. It is so insular--so inward looking--so unable to incorporate better ideas from outside. It is stuck in some gigantic time warp. A testimony to a Darwinian busines evolution.
c. It is known for its lousy wireless phone service in NYC and other large metro areas.
b. It is heavily invested in the wrong technology--TDMA and must now tweek it and use it until the system runs its economic life. This may be not so bad unless 2.5 and 3G services in the US take off like a rocket--in which case AWE will be buried in a casket of its own choosing. It can model itself after DOCOMO which has made an exonomic success out of 9.6K data---but whose system crashes once per week.

By the way, I understand that the ENGINEER guy is a former railroad "engineer" masqurading as a wireless expert. I would send him home on the first AMTRACK leaving New York.
