HJ -- I met with a mid-30s Japanese woman last week who told me more about the way Japanese women think about their lives and their futures. One of the things that struck me was her description of what it was like to make a fortune from real estate speculation in the "bubble" -- and what it was like afterwards. She spoke matter-of-factly about the five men she had worked with who had committed suicide in the years that followed. Japan paid a terrible price for the mindless speculation that gripped an entire generation -- made them feel rich, invincible and very sure of themselves. The inevitable collapse which followed still casts a shadow on Japan. For the most part, rising unemployment in Japan now is a necessary aspect of restructuring -- but it does not prove that restructuring is taking place. As for our markets, so many here on this thread are like the Japanese speculators of the 80s -- feeling rich, wanting more, feeling that they and the stock market are invincible -- so sure of themselves.
