We are talking about food here. You can't rely on overseas production for this basic necessity.

If everybody took this position, the free trade would collapse. What if, for example, China says that microprocessors are a basing necessity?

Second. I think food commodities are way to cheap, both here as in the US.

If the subsidies were removed, you may end up with higher prices of basic farm products.

They should at least charge the double for every food product.

A producer is free to do just that. But the prices are generally set by the market (despite all the anti-free market efforts of the governments), so I am not sure how much of his product would a producer sell, if his prices were doubled.

Another point is, that you are probably well off, and food budget is probably very small part of your spending (excluding expensive restaurants). But food prices are a lot higher percentage of spending of people with low income. You would totally upset their lives, and cause malnutrition.
