Maybe he's serious about getting away from commercial pressures for awhile, but with his colleagues at UCSB so heavily involved in commercial ventures, he'll be tempted.

Nitres shareholders just saw their ship come in, but unless Nakamura got involved recently, that group doesn't include him. It does include fellow UCSB professors DenBaars and Mishra, the former also of the Materials Department. Nakamura's name is not mentioned in the press release about the acquisition; I'd expect to see it there if he had any direct involvement.

At Friday's close for CREE ($145+), the deal is worth about $270 million based on the common plus the unvested shares.

When you can get capital gains like that while still in the development stage, who needs a share of royalty and licensing income? That takes years to trickle in. <g>
