Dan,

When oil prices went from $40+ dollars a barrel in the 70's to $10+ a barrel in the 80's - which was after production started coming in from the North Sea fields, the North Slope of Alaska, and increased production from those companies and countries that didn't join OPEC.

I think that the biggest reason for the drop in price in the early 1980's was the Iran-Iraq war. Both countries started selling a lot of oil to finance their war.
