Metromedia Fiber Network to Deliver Private, Optical Metro-DWDM Solution to Freddie Mac NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 1, 2000--
WaveChannel(TM) Simplifies Enterprise Networks, Provides
Scaleable, Protocol-Independent Platform to Support
Mission-Critical Business Applications
Metromedia Fiber Network (MFN) (Nasdaq: MFNX), the leader in the deployment of optical Internet infrastructure within key metropolitan areas internationally, will supply Freddie Mac with a private, unshared fiber optic network and its WaveChannel(TM) Optical Network Solution. MFN will connect several of the financial organization's offices and data centers throughout Northern Virginia.
WaveChannel integrates MFN's dark fiber and Nortel Network's (NYSE/TSE:NT) OPTera MetroTM Dense-Wave Division Multiplexing (D-WDM) technology to create a turnkey, fully-managed, one hundred percent private and unshared wavelength-based optical network capable of supporting the organization's mission-critical applications.
The offering simplifies enterprise networks and reduces IT costs by eliminating the need for expensive protocol conversion devices and individual leased lines. Initially, Freddie Mac will use the network for Gigabit Ethernet applications. As the organization's need for bandwidth grows, Freddie Mac can add channels quickly and cost-effectively, and will be able to support native protocols such as ESCON, FICON, and Fibre Channel at wire speed on their network.
"Enterprise customers have a tremendous need to share vast amounts of data between office locations. Unfortunately, the cost and underlying technology of traditional services only allow information to trickle through," said Nick Tanzi, president and chief operating officer of Metromedia Fiber Network. "By integrating dark fiber with D-WDM, enterprise organizations like Freddie Mac are provided a turnkey optical solution for high-speed interconnections over a fully private and unshared network."
"With the implementation of Metromedia Fiber Networks dark fiber capabilities, Freddie Mac's network is positioned to handle new strategic business initiatives and demands of our customers," said Milton Moore, Vice President, ISS - Computer and Network Operations.
