Dear Steve:

The only legal way to earn money from Linux, and they do support wholeheartedly this way, is to provide services. Red Hat is selling the service of adding a install script, a packaging service, and support to allow the purchasers a quick way to install Linux and have it working on your computer. How much does it cost you to find all of the appropriate versions of all the "Freeware" applications, kernel source, libraries, and device drivers, download them over a 56K baud connection, and install them properly on your system? They also add some "Shareware" and some "Commercial" software to their package. For a novice user and those that install many computers at once, this is a good deal. One only has to get one copy, and install it on as many systems as you want. They can install it on a system that can burn CDs. This allows them to make as many copies as they want.

This is why Linux is so popular. You can get it cheap, (the cost of an ISP connection) if public, or fast (as in the Red Hat or any other distribution).

Pete
