ITeX Announces Full-Rate ADSL Modem Targeting Sub $1000 PCs Host Based Architecture Dramatically Reduces Cost and Power Consumption Chipset Targets PCs, Notebooks, Workstations, PDAs and Internet Appliances Compatible With ADSL Standards Including G.dmt, ANSI T1.413 Issue 2 and G.lite SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Integrated Telecom Express, Inc. (ITeX(TM)) today announced the industry's first full-speed, ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) chip-set optimized for PCs, notebooks, workstations, PDAs and Internet appliances.
The SAM(TM) (Scalable ADSL Modem) chipset uses a host-based architecture to perform part of its ADSL processing on the unused cycles of a system's host CPU. This patent-approved approach enables engineers to design full-speed (8 Mbps downstream, 640 Kbps upstream) ADSL modems at lower cost and half the power consumption of other solutions. The chipset can exceed the upstream standard by supporting a rate of 768 Kbps.
The SAM approach provides the flexibility to support multiple standards including IT G.dmt and ANSI T1.413 Issue 2. The software also supports the industry's slower speed standard known as G.lite. Furthermore, any changes in the ADSL standards can be upgraded in the field with a software down load.
The chipset consists of the i80134 analog front end chip, i90816 digital controller and host software that does the ADSL processing on a system's CPU. The host software is pro vided on a CD-ROM as assembled Windows 95, 98, 2000 and NT4.0 object code.
The scalable aspect of the SAM chipset refers to the ability to control the amount of processing that is done on a system's CPU. This flexibility allows a portable product to reduce the ADSL speed when unplugged from the power line and thereby increases the battery life by reducing the CPU load.
According to Rich Forte, President and CEO of ITeX, ``Our SAM technology is being adopted for use in PCs, notebooks, workstations, PDAs and Internet appliances. ADSL provides faster Internet access supporting low-cost video conferencing, and the ability to view video such as movies and educational materials.''
Forte continued, ``ITeX's solution targets sub $1000 PCs presently based on 500+ MHz processors, and is even more efficient with the newer 700 MHz to 1.2 GHz processors.''
Auto-Configuration Brings Ease of Use
The SAM chipset automatically detects the ADSL central office standard being connected to, which includes ITU G.dmt, ANSI T1.413 Issue 2 and ITU G.lite. This patent approved automatic configuration feature simplifies end-user installation by allowing a customer to plug their personal computer into their ADSL telephone jack without knowing the central office standard in use.
Scalable SAM Technology Reduces Costs
The SAM technology was so named because it can control the amount of ADSL processing that is done on the microprocessor or CPU in a personal computer. This ability gives the SAM the flexibility to meet the stringent cost requirements of the personal computer industry, and also provides the ability to support different data rate and price combinations offered by the ADSL service provider.
By executing some of its complex algorithms on the host's microprocessor, the SAM chipset is able to reduce its overall gate count compared to other ADSL devices. With fewer gates, the SAM chips can be built at a lower cost and consume less power which is important for putting ADSL in notebooks and computers.
Availability and Price
The SAM chipset and software are in production now. The chipset including its host software is priced at $18 in high volumes.
