It's not hard to understand that, for people who are getting their marching orders verbatim from God, of course they're going to be unreceptive to the notion that, on Earth, you're expected to work through a consensus process with a bunch of misguided heathen who happen to be your fellow citizens.

Well, all I can say is that you must be a patient individual.

...or perhaps my perception of the above zealots given my own personal experiences, allows for little patience for their antics.

As one of those "misguided heathens" (yes, I am an Atheist --Thank god *g*), I actually view these radicals as crazy as the ones telling me that they have just been abducted by an Alien (not Cuban, nor the illegal kind). At least the Abductees do not threaten you with hell and fire if you do not believe them.

A third is that it could be dangerous to leave them to stew amongst themselves without a mainstream touchstone.

On this, I certainly agree, it is good to know what they are up to, like a 2 year old with matches... he (she), may just be capable of setting the house on fire.

And maybe the biggest reason--I can't resist the challenge.

Challenge ? hmm interesting, are you one of those individuals that keep boas constrictors as their house pet ?
