Castro could leave as legacy freedom of expression of cubanos to the point that they could have unsupervised use of the net ... but i wouldn't hold my breath on that ... i think he's trapped in the inertia of long-past glories that were largely self-deluding anyway ... but he's 73, and gone soon, imho. The net will win in the end. Then the big battle begins - to resist Bill Gates ... lol
If Castro was in his prime, I would not be surprised if he would make minced meat of the barking Americo-Cubanos that have made the headlines in this saga.
To mind comes that time in which he let out a bunch of criminals (real ones, not political ones), out of the island and sent them (with his blessings) to the Carter administration... As much as do not agree with his ideology, I have to laugh at the ability he has shown to outwit his US counterparts. --yes at a great cost.
Unfortunately you are right, I do not think he sees the writing on the wall, and so, although Castro's end is at hand, it will be one that will drag for some time without the need to be in that fashion.
As for Gates... he should move MSFT to Latin America and create a new industry there, by the time the politicians will try to steal what he creates, he could create much wealth around him. Now, THAT is the type of Tyrant needed in Lat Am. *g*
